
Come on friends, let us know! In my opinion "Health drink" should contain maximum amount of nutrients especially protein and decent amount of unsaturated fat since the most of our solid diet is carbohydrate rich food. Let's understand and unveil the meaning of some unknown terms in nutrition label of food product.
Natural sugars:
It is a type of carbohydrate which is naturally present in some plant sources of food. Example the natural sugar present in fruit is fructose.
Added sugar:
It is a type of carbohydrate usually added while processing the food products. It is also called by other names such as dextrose, malt syrup, maltose etc
Saturated fat:
Type of fat usually solid at room temperature like coconut oil and vanaspati and it is unhealthy for our body.
Unsaturated fat:
Type of fat is usually liquid temperature like olive oil , fish oil and it is usually healthy for our body.
Recommendations:
- 1. As per guideline set by Institute of medicine of national academies, the total calorie of a person should come from 45-60% of carbohydrate, 10-35% of proteins and 20-35% of total fat.
- 2. As CDC (Center for disease control and prevention) says for a healthy diet a person take below 10% of added sugar of total calorie in his diet.
Example calculation for deeper understanding:
Let us consider a young man whose required calorie is about 2000 (vary with age, gendex, height and weight)
A. carbohydrate (50%)-1000 calories=250g
1. Added sugar(10%)-200 calorie- 50g of added sugar.
2. Total carbs except added sugar (40%)- 800 calorie- 200g of carbs other than added sugar.
B. proteins (20%)-400 calories=100g
C. Fat (30%)-600 calories= 65g.
1.Saturated fat-10%-=22g
2.Unsaturated fat-20%=33g

"Health drink" good or bad:
Having the above calculation and I went for shopping to buy a good healthy drink, sadly I could not find a single product which have at least some decent amount of protein and unsaturated fat. The worst part that I come to know is most of the so called health drinks( don't want to mention any brand) contains "Added sugar" in very high composition than any other nutrient in nutrition label.
If we consume such health drink with white sugar(also a type of added sugar) we will reach above the threshold set by CDC which is not good for health. Finally I arrived a conclusion that almost all of the health drinks available in the market are "Bad" ones.
so start preparing health drinks at home with fresh fruits and nuts like fresh juices and smoothies but without or little white sugar in to it, which is really important for maintaining the good health.

Health drinks versus white sugar:
In my opinion it is better to buy the white sugar at lower price rather than buying the so called "Health drinks" at higher price since both are similar in regard to health.
Check Nutritional label:
One of my kind suggestions to my readers at lest from now look into the values of the nutrition label of the food product which you are going to buy and analyze the two following thing:
- 1.Would the product is worth buying.
- 2.would the product is really healthy and nutritional.
